A rancher and civic leader, Burns was born in 1857 in Missouri and came to Texas with his parents at age four. He was a ranch manager for the Llano Cattle Company, Nave-McCord Cattle Company, and the Western Land and Livestock Company prior to purchasing his own ranch, Idlewild. Active in the founding of Lubbock, Texas, Burns operated an automobile stageline from 1907-1909, and served as Lubbock County tax assessor for 14 years. He died in 1945. Author and historian. Born in Coolidge, Limestone County, Texas. Attended high school in Rotan, Texas. Received B.A., M.A. and Ph. D. from the University of Texas. Taught history at McMurry College (1923-1927), the University of Texas (1927-1928) and Texas Tech University (1928-1965).
